Stealing a post

Mark at the Edinburgh Castle

Fiona, ME, & Dorothy in Ary

Part of me wants to find time to share my trip to Scotland and Ireland the other part is still in Jet Lag. I managed to break a porcelain cap while in Scotland and tonight it has developed into a throbbing pain and some fever started to develop. With this being Friday I have missed the opportunity to see the Dentist until next week. I know him so I may call and see if I can get an antibiotic until I can get into see him.

So, what I am going to do for today is "steal Mark's blog." He has done such a good job blogging about our trip that I will let him tell the story - at least the part we were together. I promise next week to get in details of my Scotland time without him and Ireland.

John Houston and Janet Dickson

Today Mark and I drove to Murikirk, Scotland. The home of John Houston and Janet Dickson. We went to the Murikirk Cemetery and the caretaker was working. He came over to see if he could help us find a grave site. When I told him who I was looking for he took me to the office and pulled all the papers. I took photos and will be able to decide exactly which relatives are buried where.

This is the Parish Church in Muirkirk where John Houston and Janet Dickson were married. That would be my great great grand parents.

This is the headstone of the Dickson Family. As you might see many of the headstones are in bad shape. I am sure Janet and George are here but their headstones is more than likely destroyed from time.

The one on the right is also Dickson

These are 2 headstones for the Houston Family just in front of the Dickson headstone.

I took this photo from the far corner looking back at the church and the headstones are of the Houston and Dickson Family's

Janet Dickson and John Houston

I am finally on the hunt. I knew my Dad's family was from Muirkirk but had no idea where they might be buried. After a lot of emails and inquires I still was none the wiser. Dorothy, Callum, and I headed out to Muirkirk just 18 miles away. We went to the local Cemetery and with a list of names we started looking for the names. We had really looked all over the cemetery and about to give up because it had started rainning I turned the corner and about 3 gravestones later I saw HOUSTON. Upon looking at names and dates I found one of the gravesites. The headstone was broken but still very readable.

Then we had to dig down to find out which Janet Dickson Houston it was. It is the orginal Janet Dickson's grand daughter.

Duff Family

Duff Family

This post card was from my great aunt Mimi. Grandpa kept in touch with her and his younger sisters.

Here is the actual home. From my understanding my g grandmother, Anna Horn Barr Duff went to live with Mimi after my g grandfather passed away.

I was able to get on Google and find the home today. The house is so much the same but as you can see it isn't in the wilderness anymore.

This is Anna Horn Barr Duff with one of the children but I do not know which one.

This is my grandfather Samuel Barr Duff born in Glasgow, Scotland and died in Pittsburgh, PA
I should add he looks just like my brother David. I mean the exact image of him too.

So, Was I right or wrong???

Houston family

Maggie was a somebody!

I joined Ancestry.com with the intention of adding family members that my Dad had already researched. He spent 20+ years working and talking to people all over the world. This was before you could just click on the little leaf. My cousin in London, Larry Shearer, has been on Ancestry.com for many years. He came to visit Mom and I in May. We shared photo's and Mom sat and gave us all the names she could remember. He sparked an interest and I decided to take all of Dad's records and put them on Ancestry.com.

I joined and added all the information Dad had. I was so surprised to find most of what he had researched was right on the money. I found censes that backed up all his information. Then as I looked and searched more and more I was able to find people that he was not able to find. They were just there with the click of a button.

Now all of my life I had heard stories about how my dad's mom (grandma to me) was from a wealthy, well to do, family from Scotland. My thought all my life was "so what? what did that have to do with me?" Well, it still doesn't really matter. 3 of my grandparents were born in Scotland and I never had family in this country. Then with my Dad in the military we moved all over the country and world. I always felt lost no family, no relatives. I never knew family! It was as best as I can describe "like being adopted and wanting to find some roots". Why is that important? I think it is because we all want to feel like we are part of something. We are not alone. In moving every 3 years you never have time to make friends - either they move or you do.

In the need to be part of a family I started to research. I found where my Dad's family is from in Scotland. I have the privilege of being able to make a trip next month to Scotland. My mom's family still live there and it has been a joy to keep up with them. I am going to try and find where the rest of my family is from.

Maggie Wortherspoon Chalmers Houston

Maggie was the woman that was taught that you do not change social classes. She went to a private school and her father owned his own store. Maggie lost her mother at 6 and in the desire to keep her mom close she always remembered she was a Wortherspoon. She had a new step mother within a year of her mom's death. She always talked about her step mother as "her mother". Then she was up rooted 3 years later from a county and family she felt close to. My great grandfather gave up everything they had to come to this country. The american dream. Freedom. He was under political pressures and left for those reason. He brought none of his power or riches to this country. He started over like most immigrants do.

After Maggie married my grandfather she lost her first 2 children. The first was 7 months old. She also lost the step mother that raised her on the same day she lost her sweet daughter. The next child, a son, died at 1 year and 11 months old from the flu. Next she had 2 daughters and then a son. Her son died from a fall into a fire place. He burned to death at the age of 3 1/2. Grandma lived with the scars on her arms trying to go in after him. Her husband was a tough one to live with not easy. She then had 2 more sons - the last one was my father. Maggie had to bury the first son of these sons before her own death just 1 year - 1 month later. How much does one woman have to endure. She buried 2 mom's, left her country, friends, family, and buried 4 of her children. Her life was not easy - my grandfather was not an easy man to live with. But, they were Christians and that is how they made it.

I have learned a lot searching for family. Who am I? I am the grand daughter of some very important people. Two sets of grandparents that loved me beyond what I could have ever imagined.

I never knew my paternal grand parents. I have no big memory of them. But, in searching for them I have learned who they were. Maggie became a strong woman. In her trials of letting go she has taught me to be strong to. To hold onto a God that will get us through anything. Who my ancestors are doesn't really matter. Not in the long haul of things. But, what it does helps us learn is that a lot of people have made me who I am today.

Maggie a story I never knew. A quiet, strong, woman. You were a somebody. Born 10 Dec 1878 Hamilton, Scotland died 22 Feb 1960.

You taught me much!

Elizabeth's First Birthday

Yes folks my grand-baby is now 1 year old. It was a fun, fast, few days. It started when I got to Houston opening the gifts I got her. Not all of the gifts made her happy though she definitely has a strong opinion.

Here is a short video taken by Mark as she received her gifts.

She then had a fantastic party at her Nana and Pa's house. About 50 people showed up for a 1 year old.

Can I just say these are the best BFF's in Houston. Without them the party would have never happened. Kat (Left)made all the cup cakes from scratch. Becky(right) came and helped direct and set up for the party. Sarah in the middle..

Uncle Mark flew in from Scotland for the big event!!!
And what is a party without the grandmother's

Karen Walrond

Karen Walrond's new book soon to be released. The Beauty Of Difference. I have gotten to know Karen through
Sarah. I was visiting Sarah one morning when she got up and said "I have a photo shoot with a lady that is going to take pictures of people for a book.
When Sarah got home from the photo shoot she could not stop talking about Karen and what a awesome lady
she was. I almost got to meet her the last time I was in Houston but Karen's sweet dog was poisoned and was very sick.
So, Karen you and I will have to meet another day and I can't wait to meet you.

Here is her video for the preview for the book.

And Sarah is in the video too.

100 things I want to do before it ends.

I am thinking about a list of things to do before I die.  I got my idea from Karen Walrond who started a list of "the 100+ things I want to do before i go" I have not had time to sit down and write a list. So, I am going to make my list as I go. If I find something I want to do then I will add it. If it is something I have already done I want to be proud of it so I am adding it to my list. Guess you could call it back dating.

1. Run a Half Marathon - Have done 2 now
2. Take a training course on Oil Clean up -- going tomorrow
3. Hope I do not have to clean up but do it if needed.
4. I stole this one from Karen, Learn how to do a Rubik's Cube. Karen gave a link to this video to start learning. I use to solve them when they first came out with a cheat sheet. Would love to know how to do it without the cheat sheet.

Tornado Damage

Complex Chemicals Photo from V'burg Post. As you can see the newer tanks in the front left with chemicals stood. The older ones are in the back left of the train. The chemicals in the tank cars did leak but self contained on the property. That mass of metal in the back right is the building gone. This photo was taken from back side of the plant. Guess the photographer couldn't tell the front from the back of the plant anymore.

We are all just so grateful no one was killed. Some have been family to us for 30+ years.  All the injured workers are out of the hospital but not back to work.

A. Bitch

I am starting a tradition as of today. I am naming tornado's just like we name hurricanes. Today's rip through Louisiana and MS will start with the letter A and B. So, since I started it I get to name it and I name it A. Bitch.

I had the weather channel on to see what was going on for today. I hear an announcement that in Omega, LA a tornado hit and destroyed a Chemical Complex just outside of Tallulah. Then I hear it was in Madison. Well, I am not an idiot I knew right off that was Complex Chemicals in Madison Parish just outside of Tallulah.  As the announcements came in they corrected Omega to just Tallulah in Madison Parish. I knew this was my ex- husbands company. It is a small company and Jerry started it almost 40 years ago. We were married for 24 years and it was what our lives centered around. When we married it was almost in bankruptcy and we built and sacrificed many years to build it up to what it is today.  I know the families and employees. I thought of James, Mike, Ray, Stacy right off. My step son Travis and of course my ex Jerry. I was  hearing news of people trapped and deaths. My heart raced and I wanted to throw up.

Well, I am grateful to announce there were only 3 injuries, no deaths, and no one was trapped, but it was demolished. I talked to Jerry later in the day and he sounded like he was still in shock. He was trying to tell me that OSHA, EPA and... and.... I interrupted him and said "and all the other alphabets are there". He laughed. When we first got married I could make him laugh and to know I could do that for him today made me feel good. I doubt he will remember what I said or that he laughed because he is in shock. The tears are coming but I know healing is also coming.

After last week when my daughter's home was burglarized and then they received a threatening phone call the day their security system was installed. I come home just to wake up to the tornado damage. I have so been reminded that what God gives us can be taken away in a split second. It is also a reminder of where it all came from to begin with. Jerry and I use to talk in the beginning, when we had nothing, about all the good things God was doing for us. Somewhere along the way it was forgotten. Today is a wake up call!!!!!!!

Even though "Complex" is where A. Bitch started it continued into MS and took many lives. We are in prayer for all that lost life and property today.

A week in Houston

I ran some errands last friday came home and was unloading the groceries. Sarah called and was trying to tell me her house was broken into while she was on a photo shoot. I got off the phone with her because the cops had just gotten there. I was in such a state of confusion I didn't know what to do. My mother wondered if I should go out to Houston and I immediately said yes. In 30 minutes I was packed and ready to go. I made some calls and took off. It was Friday afternoon traffic but I had a very calm feeling and the drive went well. I will be  heading back in the morning a week later. But, I have seen their safety is in check and Elizabeth has wonderful parents. I watched my son in law and daughter go through a tough week as I watched Elizabeth for them. I saw a father take care of his family better than any father could ever do. Ryan was such a protector and I know as I leave tomorrow he will take care of the other two people I love. I had a great time and got to know my family in a whole new light. Yes, I know Sarah and she is a light in my life. Elizabeth is love. But, Ryan, is such a great husband and father. I am so blessed to have this family as mine. To see them laugh together and pray together I truly know God has put them together!!!

Just some random art I found in the midst of chaos.

Adobe Photoshop

I just purchased Adobe Photoshop and I feel like I just came home. Ever since I purchased my Mac and Aperture I felt disconnected. I worked with photo's in it over and over and they never worked out right. I decided to switch over to PShop and try again. It feels like I have done this before and is coming so naturally.  If I go back to the old computer I bet anything that is the program that I used on my PC. I am just so excited!!!!!!!!

Stamps

My father was in WWII in the Pacific. He was in Guam/Philippine's  and at the end of the war was heading for Japan. He and Mom started going to the reunions of the "3rd Engineers Special Brigade".  Mom and Dad loved to travel. Every chance they got they would go somewhere. But, the reunions were a place Dad could have a time to share with others that had been where he was and done what he had done. No one will ever understand that feeling but the other Men and Women that faced that battle. Dad talked about it with us kids only to say things like: when they were in a fox hole in the midst of getting shot at they would say well there went one of ours. It was like a game - one for them then one for us. He also told us that they would laugh at the most in appropriate times. As he came to understand it was an emotion and if they didn't laugh they would cry. I am so sure that was a horrible time for them.

What brought this up today was the letter for the reunion came in the mail. Mom sat it on the table and did not open it. When I saw it I was like "who is Cooper". That was all that the return address said - no first name. Mom said it was from the reunion. She did not even want to see it. Most of the time she opens all of Dad's mail but not this one.

I did find the stamps most interesting. I think there is a story - I just don't know what it is. Maybe I just do not want to cry so I laughed at the stamps.

Shepherd's Pie serves 6

Pre-heat oven to 375* Dad did 400*. But I used convect bake. Serves 6. Takes about 1 hour depending on how fast you peal and chop.

2.5 lbs red potatoes
1 1/2 lbs ground round
1 medium onion
jar beef gravy
Season salt *optional
Worcestershire Sauce a MUST.
1/2 c milk
1/3 c margarine
salt and pepper to taste

Peal and dice potatoes. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 15 minutes until a fork goes in with just a little force.

While the potatoes boil chop onion and saute just a few minutes and add ground round. Cook until all the pink is out of the meat. Drain the meat.

Place in the bottom of a casserole dish that has been sprayed with cooking oil.

Mix in gravy. More can be added but don't over do or it will be runny and the potatoes will not stay on top.

When potatoes can be pierced with a fork gently breaking apart drain. Do not cook to a mushy state!!
Drain.

Add season salt to taste about 2 teaspoons. Add milk and margarine.

Mix until firm but creamy. They do better if just a little stiff so you can keep them on top of the meat mixture.

Spoon onto meat mixture but DO NOT SMOOTH OUT!

You want the mountain peaks so they will brown. Crispy topped potatoes are awesome.

Bake at 375* for about 25-30 minutes. I used convection at 375* for 20 minutes. It could have stayed in a little longer but Grandma was hungry.  Serve and pour the Worcestershire sauce all over it.
